Preston Russell has had the privilege of being home to the Crown Solicitor warrant for Southland (encompassing Queenstown and Wanaka) for over 40 years. The current Crown Solicitor, Mary-Jane Thomas, was appointed to prosecute serious crime on behalf of the Solicitor-General in 2005 and was the first woman outside the Crown Law Office to attain this position. Mary-Jane and her team appear regularly in the District and High Courts, prosecuting serious criminal cases and providing advice to the Police and other Government Departments in Southland and elsewhere in the country. All the prosecutors in the team practice in other areas of the law which means they bring the skill, discipline and court experience to a wide range of other areas of litigation.
