Uptown Shelby Association
The Uptown Shelby Association, Inc. is a non-profit organization established in 1982 to coordinate downtown revitalization efforts in Shelby, NC. USA is run by an excellent staff, including Chandler Poole (Executive Director), Lisa Griffin (Promotions Coordinator), and JoAnn Sexton (Adminstrative Assistant). In 1980, Shelby was one of the first 5 cities in North Carolina, and among the first 30 in the country, designated as a National Main Street City. The North Carolina Main Street Program provides no governmental funding but gives substantial self-help direction and technical assistance to chosen communities. Designation as a Main Street City is an honor, showing the City's commitment to downtown revitalization. The Uptown Shelby Association, Inc. has a 27-member board of directors representing various segments of the entire city and county. Its purpose is to implement the four-point approach to revitalization as espoused by the Main Street Center of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
