Amherst Woodworking manufactured and installed Architectural Woodwork for academic/institutional, fine residential and historic restoration projects throughout New England and eastern NY. We were 40 dedicated professionals united in the common purpose of exceeding your expectations of quality for product and service. Our craftsmanship was matched by thorough and committed project management to insure timely delivery of your woodwork. Our specialties emphasize the wood in woodwork. Veneer work has included Nigerian Satinwood, Rice Figured American Sycamore, Quartered Thai Teak, Tamo Ash, Carpathian Elm Burl, Quartered Anigre, Birdseye Maple, as well as Quartered & Rift Red & White Oak, Cherry, Black Walnut, Ash, and Douglas Fir. Custom moldings are produced in our plant on two Weinig molders with over 4000 available stock patterns and custom knives ground to match your sample or drawing. We manufacture custom stile & rail doors, interior & exterior, in any wood specie, for contractors and millwork shops. Our customers choose from a wide variety of sticking & panel patterns, or design their own. Design & specification assistance is available. Our work has been recognized with three Awards of Excellence from The Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI), the 2006 AWI Standards of Excellence, Residential Category, award, as well as articles in Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, New England Home Magazine, Design Solutions, and Renovation Style Magazine. Starting in September 1975, company founder David Short made custom furniture for local clients as well as selling small quantities of hardwood lumber from an 800 sf. North Amherst, MA workshop. In 1977 the company expanded to 2400 sf., widening their scope to include architectural woodworking. 1980 presented an opportunity to acquire a 14,000 sf. woodworking shop and the company moved to Northampton, MA. The larger plant facilitated 30-40% annual growth through the 1980's and in July 1994, Amherst Woodworking moved to its present 33,000 sf. home in the Northampton Industrial Park. Our commitment to resource conservation started in earnest with the move to our new plant in 1994. The 35,000 cubic foot per minute dust collection system is powered by a 75 hp reverse incline fan, an energy savings of 40% over the 125 hp requirements of a traditional system. Our wood waste; molder shavings, sawdust, ground scrap wood, and sander dust fill a 48' trailer every 1-2 weeks and are recycled into bedding for the cows at the Yazwinski dairy farm in Deerfield, MA, ultimately becoming natural fertilizer on their fields. We reconfigured the spray booth in our finishing room to reduce the required air volume, saving 42% on heat and electricity. With the installation of reflectors plus high output ballasts & bulbs we were able to cut by one half the number of fluorescent bulbs lighting the plant, saving 55% on electrical requirements. A power factor correction capacitor has improved our electrical power factor by 22%. Amherst Woodworking has been a member of the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) since 1984 and the Wood Products Manufacturers Association (WPMA) since 1983. David Short is currently a director of the WPMA and a Past President of the New England Chapter of AWI.
