Birchtree Farm

Birchtree Farm

Birchtree Farm is a small family farm located on approximately 12 acres in picturesque Tamworth, NH. Our breeding goals include overall good health with special consideration towards parasite resistance, soft thick fleeces, good meat conformation and stocky build, excellent mothering ability and milkiness, calm temperaments, and correct and beautiful horn set. We have sheep with AI sires in their pedigrees including Aboti, Bambi, Blaevar, Dalur, Flotti, Grimur, Hnykill, Horvi, Kani, Kudi, Laekur, Moli, Rektor, and Serkur. We are members of the Icelandic Sheep Breeders of North America (ISBONA) , and our sheep are registered with the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation (CLRC) , the organization which registers Icelandic sheep in North America. We are also enrolled in the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program and our flock ID is NH54. We raise our sheep primarily on pasture, browse, and local hay. When ewes are raising lambs we supplement this diet as needed to maintain good health for the ewes and growth for the lambs. Hay (and pasture) varies widely in its nutritional content according to where it was grown, the weather conditions during the growing year, etc. We do send hay samples for testing so we know what we have to work with. Then we may add supplements such as alfalfa pellets, beet pulp pellets, sunflower seeds, soybean meal, or formulated sheep pellets to the diet. Our sheep also receive loose minerals, cobalt blocks, and kelp free choice. While we aim to maintain a "grassfed" flock, we will not sacrifice the health of our sheep when the available forage or hay is not nutritionally adequate on its own. Helping oversee operations on our farm is Jake, our English Shepherd. Find out more about the traditional American working farmcollie here. Feel free to browse through our pages to find information on breeding stock, fleece, roving, and pelts for sale. We also will have a limited number of freezer lambs available each Fall. Email or call for information on reserving a freezer lamb. Also, be sure to check out our blog site! Thank you for visiting!
