Brisbane Grammar School

Brisbane Grammar School is a non-selective independent day and boarding school for boys located on a wonderfully landscaped and heritage listed site in the centre of Brisbane. The School opened in 1868 on its Roma Street site and soon after relocated to its present site on Spring Hill over-looking the central business district of Brisbane. It now caters for about 1400 boys in Years 6 to 12. In 2014, Brisbane Grammar School will expand to incorporate Year 5. The School has two sections on its Gregory Terrace campus - Years 6 to 8 (the Middle School) and Years 9 to 12. These operate in an integrated manner and provide a seamless transition from Year 8 into Year 9, while at the same time providing an educational environment which is tailored to the needs of the particular age groups housed in each section of the School. The predominant aim of the School is to provide its students with a set of experiences which aim to promote the development of attitudes, skills and a knowledge base which will serve as a foundation for students' critical intelligence, imaginative and creative powers, effective communication and the capacity and enthusiasm for independent life-long learning. In addition, the program of academic learning, school activities and student welfare provisions at the School are designed to promote the development and extension of the personal character and talents of the students and the development of a strong sense of service, community, leadership and loyalty to others. The School is a member of the Queensland Great Public Schools Association (Inc.) and as such is one of nine schools in Brisbane and the surrounding areas which, as an association, provide opportunities for their Year 8 to 12 students to participate in fifteen different sports and activities during the year. We are also a member of the Combined Independent Colleges association of schools which provides similar sporting and activity opportunities for boys in Years 6 and 7. In addition to the external sporting and activities program, the School also maintains an extensive music program, an individual athletic development program, and a diverse range of other activities designed to give the students the opportunity to participate with other students and enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie which results from students working and training together as well as developing their specific talents, skills and passion in a particular endeavour. A central part of an education at Grammar is the emphasis that the School places on ensuring that the welfare of its students is a pivotal concern. From the Deputy Headmaster - Students to the Heads of Years and the Form Teachers, there are a number of adults at the School who not only monitor each student closely but provide important role models for the students as they make their journey from childhood to adulthood. The School has an enviable reputation in Queensland and Australia for the quality of its graduating students and is justifiably proud of its Old Boys and the contributions that they have made in many aspects of science, medicine, business, education, the law and the military both in Australia and internationally. From Arthur Stanley Roe who was the first Rhodes Scholar from Queensland in 1904 to Nick Luke in 2005 and Ryan Goss in 2006, two recent recipients of Rhodes Scholarships, the School is also immensely proud of having twenty-four past students selected as either Queensland Rhodes Scholars or Australia at large Rhodes Scholars.
