British -American Investments Company Limited (Britam) is a diversified financial services group, listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, with interests across the Eastern Africa region. The group offers a wide range of financial products and services in Insurance, Asset management, Banking and Property. The product range includes: life, health and general insurance, pensions, unit trusts, investment planning, wealth management, off-shore investments, retirement planning, discretionary portfolio management, Property development and private Equity. Britam has offices in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and South Sudan, and a presence in Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania, following the acquisition of Real Insurance Company in 2014. The Group has a long heritage in providing financial services since 1920, when it was incorporated in the Bahamas. The Kenyan operation was established in 1965 and has close to 50 years of service in the market. Britam has grown tremendously from a small home based service insurance company to the leading diversified financial services provider in the region, with an asset base of over Kshs 55 billion, as at June 30, 2014. The human resource has also grown from 29 employees and 50 agents in 1980 to about 548 employees and 1,946 Financial Advisors as at 2014. Britam is committed to providing clients with great service and competent financial expertise to help them meet their financial goals. British-American Insurance Company (Kenya) Limited was incorporated as a private limited liability company in 1979. Owing to organic growth and the incorporation of other subsidiary companies within the company, British-American Investments Company (Kenya) Ltd was incorporated as a holding company in 1995. As part of a bigger plan to diversify its financial services offering in the Kenyan market, British American Asset Management Company was incorporated as an asset management arm of the group in 2004. The company offers investment funds structured as Unit trusts and discretionary Portfolio management to both institutions and private clients. In 2007, Britam acquired a strategic stake of 10.1 per cent in Equity Bank, and a 21.6 per cent shareholding in Housing Finance. In 2010, Britam's regional expansion started with the group venturing into Uganda with the incorporation of Britam Insurance Company (Uganda) Limited. In 2012, the group rebranded from Britak to Britam, creating a new fresh identity. In 2013, Britam entered into a strategic partnership with the Acorn Group, through the purchase of a 25 percent stake in the leading real estate firm, as part of its wider strategy to venture into the property market. Britam Insurance Company (Rwanda) Limited was incorporated and licensed in 2013 by the National Bank of Rwanda. During the same year, Britam began the process of acquiring a 99 percent share in Real Insurance Company. The transaction was completed in August 2014. The acquisition gave Britam the largest geographical reach of any Kenyan insurer with a presence in seven countries namely Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Malawi and Mozambique. The group recognises the critical role of ICT in supporting the business and has invested heavily in the implementation of Project Jawabu, the IT-enabled Business transformation strategy aimed at the providing excellent services to our clients and our stakeholders. In 2014, Britam issued its first Corporate Bond through the NSE which raised Kshs 6 billion to fund future strategic initiatives including real estate opportunities, private equity local and regional expansion ICT development.
