Camp Walden Gets Greener! Camp Walden, a scenic community nestled in the woods of Northern Ontario, is part of a naturally green environment. As we spend our summers living within this beautiful, natural landscape, it is our responsibility to be at the forefront of greening camp. By being situated here at camp, a naturally green environment, we are also dedicated to providing environmental education for children. The initial stages of greening Camp Walden are already evident in the various green initiatives we are developing. For example, we have established an environmental committee of staff this summer, focusing on grassroots initiatives and programs available to encourage camper participation. These initiatives are complemented by a dedicated commitment from the ownership of camp to provide environmentally friendly activities. Additionally, the maintenance staff at camp, Brian O'Brian and his team has been working on various ways to conserve energy by maximizing natural shade and diminishing power usage. There are also several significant, ongoing projects in the works at camp this summer. Some of these larger projects include investigating the installation of a dishwasher to reduce the number of disposable plates being used, investing in alternative energy methods such as wind turbines, solar energy, and/or tank-less water heating systems. These green initiatives are major investment projects that Camp Walden hopes to install at least one of within the next few years. Camp Walden is still in the stage of collecting information regarding these, as well as other, "green" ways to generate electricity and reduce our electrical load. For example, some of these smaller green projects include switching all of our current light bulbs to energy efficient light bulbs. Another important and immediate initiative being instituted at camp addresses the issue of garbage collection, specifically the separation of aluminum and plastic.
