Candy could only have been born in Italy, and could only have expanded during the boom years of the 1950s and 1960s. Around Milan, there was a network of mechanical workshops where the motivation and know-how for innovation came from. The brain has never to be too far away from the hands: developments in Italian appliances along the Varese-Monza-Pordenone axis (and in the Marche region) were possible because designers could "touch" their ideas, i.e. see them coming off the production lines. Our factories and R&D departments have always been manned by skilled professionals, delivering manufacturing quality and guaranteing a smooth passage from one generation to the next. Nowadays, although the pursuit of excellence is as relentless as it ever was, pricing has become a vital factor. It means that we have to decide upon a price while the product is still in the preliminary stages of definition.
