Cape Jaffa Wines

Cape Jaffa Wines makes a wholehearted commitment to the environment, going above and beyond by implementing many sustainable and innovative practices across our business. From our biodynamic approach in the vineyard, composting programme, water management plan and the set up of a sustainable woodlot and seed orchard, we move towards minimising our carbon footprint every day. Our ultimate goal is to become a carbon neutral winery which concentrates its efforts towards improving the immediate natural environment. Our philosophy is primarily driven by our deep respect for a unique terroir that has seen us consistently produce quality Limestone Coast fruit for over sixteen years, and recognition of the fact that maintaining this balance in our natural environment will continue to reward us with elegant, fruit-driven wines for many years to come. Cape Jaffa has partnered up with Greening Australia to raise money for local revegetation projects in our local area. Since going biodynamic in the vineyard, we've been thinking about how a small company like us can give back to our local environment. That's the reason we've partnered up with Greening Australia. They're helping us out to create environmental benefits in our glorious part of Australia starting in our very own backyard. And to get it all going we'd donating 15 cents from every bottle sold throughout Australia. When we've saved up a few dollars we're hoping we might be able to help fund a few worthwhile projects in the Coorong, Australia's famous lagoon ecosystem of international significance, as well as a Greening Australia local native vegetation guide for the South East region. Greening Australia's also going to help us work out how these activities can offset the greenhouse gases we emit through the daily running of Cape Jaffa, helping us to achieve our ultimate aim of carbon neutrality in the vineyard and winery. Being green at Cape Jaffa is not just our business, it's a lifestyle choice. Cape Jaffa's commitment to revegetaion in the South East has already begun with the planting of two hectares of vineyard land to a Greening Australia-assisted native woodlot and seed orchard. The seed orchard is available to local groups for seed collection and further planting in the South East region of our state. This year Robe Primary School students help us plant 600 seedlings as part as Planet Ark's National Plant a Tree Day on 31 July, 2009, annexing land off our exisitng woodlot plantation. About twenty hectares of the vineyard property is earmarked for planting. The Cape Jaffa biodynamic vege garden is another local project of ours, which is home to our developing preparation 500 and composing preparations which we put into the vineyard. It's not only a great source of organic local produce for the lucky people who work here, but a great teaching tool for our new vineyard staff who come out each year from all over the world: you can't argue with the flavour of a BD-grown tomato.
