Connetquot High School recently hosted a benefit concert headlined by a Connetquot student-led youth rock band, Route 111, to help raise awareness for both the Relay for Life event taking place May 13 and the "Tumor Tacklers" initiative. The Relay for Life helps the American Cancer Society fund groundbreaking research, important patient care programs, and provides education and prevention information. Connetquot High School will host the Relay for Life for the first time, during which community members will join together and walk to remember those who lost their cancer battles, the survivors making strides and raise funds to support the American Cancer Society. The 'Tumor Tacklers," in association with the National Brain Tumor Society, works to raise awareness and much needed resources to fund critical brain tumor research in support of Connequot's Director of Fine Arts and Music, Jon-Michael Lasher. "Our main goal was to generate interest in our upcoming Relay for Life, and I believe we accomplished that," said Courtney Huguenin, Connetquot High School psychologist and co-organizer of Rock the Relay. "After the holidays we will have a Relay for Life informational meeting for community members who would like to participate or provide support." Route 111 consists of Connetquot High School students Thomas Foschino, Paul Foschino and Micah Varriale, and Smithtown High School West student Nick Santori.
