Operating since 2002, the Institute for Virtual Enterprise (IVE) is a CUNY special initiative housed at Kingsborough Community College, Brooklyn, with the mission of using technology simulations as means to engage students in active learning. IVE training is based on the concept of the "practice firm," a teaching tool first used in Europe to help students better understand business concepts, as well as personal financial skills and money management principles. Under IVE¡¯s auspices, this original concept has evolved into an interdisciplinary, technology driven financial literacy simulation/program where students develop and manage global entrepreneurial virtual enterprises (VE's) in an online business environment, trading their goods and services in a closed global economy with participating firms and students in every corner of the world. Students actively apply financial literacy (both on a personal and corporate level) in a safe learning environment, which is supported by IVE's proprietary technology "backbone, " The MarketMaker. The MarketMaker is comprised of a virtual bank, a credit card, an e-commerce system, and a stock market (online: www.ivefinancial.com). IVE has grown rapidly since 2002, and now directly serves more than 6,000 CUNY students and 2,000 high school students and community members within New York City. In addition, IVE successfully reaches out to other colleges and VE networks in California, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Austria, and south-eastern Europe. IVE's overall success helped to articulate what has become the IVE Global Collaborative whose mission is to spread its financial education programs, tools, and materials among the participating network partners.
