Digital Sputnik is a company established by two brothers dedicated to a revolution in film tech innovation. The founders Kaur and Kaspar Kallas are multifunctioning industry specialists who passionately believe that breaking new ground with state-of-the-art technical solutions brings more creativity to the world. The story of DS began in 2001 from a shared interest in the world of digital technology and visual imaging. Kaur started his camera collection with Canon xl1 and got lost in the moving pictures. Around same time Kaspar went to film school and cemented his film and video obsession. Fast forward to 2006; the brothers have set up a post production company. Soon a young Estonian director wants to film her first feature and they agree to supply the full technical solution for it. With an ambitious idea to to shoot at least 2K digital raw. Kaspar remembers that he had seen a strange camera head in a faraway corner booth at NAB called Silicon Imaging SI2K. We decided to take the plunge and order it. What arrived was a working prototype without a recorder and a non functioning lens mount. This started our journey of building custom solutions for the film industry. Since 2007 we have built plenty of custom recorders for the SI2K camera, ending up with a solid state recorder without any moving parts intended for use in the extreme weather conditions. In 2009 we thought if we could connect 2 SI2K camera heads to the recorder we would have a small and mobile 3D camera system. By 2010 we had built a mobile 3D camera system which weighs only 7 kg without the battery, while other options on the market were weighing 35 kg's and more. Our system was successfully used by Werner Herzog for filming his 3D masterpiece "Cave of Forgotten Dreams". The brothers have since been working closely with DOP's and directors to deliver the new concept and philosophy in lighting for motion picture. The original focus switched on LED technology in 2009. The brothers predicted that soon the market would be ready for replacing HMI with LED lights. After extensive research it was clear that the technology for creating this scenario was becoming possible. This is why starting from 2010 majority of their effort has gone into perfecting a LED lighting system for replacing HMI as the main light for film production set lighting. We want to make life meaningful by helping to tell great stories, create life-changing tech solutions, and push our own expectations every day. We want to look at the world differently while encouraging others to do the same. At Digital Sputnik we aim and shoot for the stars.
