The Door

The Door

Founded in 1972, The Door has helped a diverse and rapidly growing population of disconnected youth in New York City gain the tools they need to become successful - in school, work, and life. Key to its success, The Door has always remained nimble and equipped to make the necessary adjustments to meet the changing needs of its members. Each year, The Door provides a safe caring environment for about 11,000 young people from all over New York City, with a wide range of services including Adolescent Health; Education; Career Development; Legal Services; Supportive Housing; Recreation; and Nutrition - all for free, completely confidentially, and under one roof, including Broome Street Academy, The Door's in house charter high school which serves about 300 students each year. Headquartered in SoHo, Manhattan with a Bronx satellite, The Door currently has 300 employees and an operating budget of about $30 million. No other organization provides these comprehensive services all in one place. Integration is the cornerstone of The Door's programming. Increased staff collaborations and truly "wraparound" services have led to stronger bonds of support, amplified triumphs, and more empowered young people. As an innovative, highly respected New York City nonprofit, The Door enjoys a national and international reputation. Approaching its 50-year milestone, The Door is poised for growth to meet the evolving needs of the youth it serves.
