The main focus is ease of use and the avoidance of the hassle with server setups, maintenance, and backups which all too often constitute a too big hurdle for academic groups and small companies. Another major goal was to achieve cross-platform performance and since ecLabNote is run completely in the browser it can be used on all platforms, including iPhone and iPad.
