The Geological Survey of Austria (Geologische Bundesanstalt) is the largest geoscientific research center in Austria. As a research institution of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, it collects and interprets geoscientific information, providing it to the public and laying the foundation for sustainable use of the countrys geogenic potential. The main activities are geological mapping, the study of mineral resources and geological hazards as well as investigations for the sustainable supply of drinking water and geothermal energy recovery. Founded in 1849, it is the oldest geological survey in continental Europe (!) and founding member of EuroGeoSurveys - continuously and actively participating in a large number of international projects.
