Highway Hospice

We care for both the patient and their families - and we do this with no expectation of payment. When most people think of Highway Hospice they think of our 8-bed In Patient Unit at Sherwood and they think that this is where the terminally ill come to die. Many people with a terminal illness are reluctant to cross our threshold for that reason. Highway Hospice came into being not just for those with a terminal illness or chronic disease, but also for their families and care givers. So often terminally ill patients are discharged from hospital back into their homes and their families have neither the means to employ a specialised care giver, or the skills to do the job themselves. Caring for someone with a terminal illness is both emotionally draining and physically exhausting. We offer both counselling and training to these families and care givers, giving them the skills and support they so desperately need. We also send out our registered nurses to their homes to assist. When the family feels they cannot cope due to exhaustion, we step in and admit the patient into our In Patient Unit for a few days to give the care giver and family a well-deserved rest. After a while we send the patient home again to be with their loved ones. Often the patient is in extreme pain and the care giver and family cannot ease the suffering, so once again Highway Hospice opens its doors and admits the patient for a short period to assist with pain management, and once everything is back under control, we send the patient home again. Highway Hospice is a haven of love and caring, of peace and pain control. We place no restrictions on our patients - they spend their days with us under exactly the same conditions they would at home. They can eat what they want, they can drink what they want and they can even bring a well-loved family pet with them if they wish. Their family members can stay overnight and all are offered the same level of love and care, regardless of income, colour or creed. All our services are offered at no cost to the patient and we receive no government funding so please keep a space in your heart for Highway Hospice. We are here for you
