Institute of Reading Development

Institute of Reading Development

The Institute of Reading Development is contracted by universities, colleges, school districts, and municipalities to teach reading development programs to students ranging in age from 4-years old through adulthood. Our curriculum integrates skill development with an emphasis on independent reading. Our mission is to instill a passion for reading in students of all ages by leading them to the experience of absorption and identification in imaginative literature. The Institute was founded in 1970 by Paul Copperman, author of The Literacy Hoax and Taking Books to Heart: How to Develop a Love of Reading in Your Child. Paul graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California at Berkeley, and received a M.Ed. from Lone Mountain College in San Francisco (now University of San Francisco, Lone Mountain Campus). He was appointed by President Reagan and confirmed by the United States Senate to serve as a Member of the National Council on Educational Research.
