Jewish Family & Community Services
JFCS was founded in 1917 as United Jewish Charities and was known for assisting people with food and emergency shelter. The Agency is a charter member of the United Way, joining the organization when it was established in 1924 as the Community Chest. Since its inception, JFCS has been proactive in identifying changing needs in the community and in developing services to meet those needs. Through nearly 100 years and several name changes, JFCS has remained true to the mission of helping people help themselves. The agency still offers emergency financial assistance, food and counseling services. In 1949, the agency became the only licensed Jewish child-placing agency in the country, placing its first child for adoption in 1951. Families have found solace and support through varied therapeutic programs, such as counseling and workshops. The agency continues to offer critical services to the elderly, enhancing their quality of life and enabling independent living. JFCS is committed to the mission of "helping people help themselves" and serves all persons in a non-discriminatory manner. For over 15 years, JFCS and Catholic Charities have served as lead agencies for the distribution of emergency assistance dollars for rent, utilities and deposits. In 2001, JFCS collaborated with the Boys Home Association to form Family Support Services of North Florida, Inc., the lead agency for the administration of community based foster care services in Duval County. We are proud of our reputation.
