The Ocean Coal

• The Ocean Coal Company was founded in 1864 by David Davies (North Wales descendant), who was responsible for opening the railway link with Barry to take away the monopoly enjoyed by the Bute Family of Cardiff. The company owned 15,000 acres of land for mineral mining, at the high point producing 21/4 million tonnes of coal a year.
