Levinsky College

Levinsky College of Education (LCE) was established in 1912 in Tel Aviv by the Hovevei Zion (Lovers of Zion) movement. Its name perpetuates the memory of writer, journalist and Zionist activist Elhanan Leib Levinsky (1857-1911). LCE focuses on teacher training with an emphasis on preservice training as well as in-service continuing education for practicing teachers. The College offers a variety of Bachelor's programs in education (B.Ed.), programs to retrain academics for careers in education, Master's programs in education (M.Ed., M.Teach), as well as special programs geared towards specific populations. These programs are conducted within LCE's Faculty of Education, Faculty of Music Education, Faculty of Multidisciplinary Studies, International School and School for Continuing Education. LCE, a subsidiary of the Jewish Agency for Israel, was founded with the support of the Women's Division of the New York United Jewish Appeal. Donations are considered a gift to a non-profit organization and are tax deductible. LCE has always strived to: Provide and instill uncompromising academic excellence Promote quality teaching and life-long learning Initiate technological innovations Cater to the changing needs of a pluralistic and multicultural society The college was the first to use Hebrew as the language of instruction for teacher training and the first to receive academic accreditation for all of its teacher education programs. LCE was also one of the first colleges in Israel to receive accreditation for its master's degree program and was recently one of the first to receive academic accreditation for two of its M.Ed. programs with thesis - Teaching and Learning, and Music Education. The staff continuously adapts the curriculum to the changing demands of society, incorporating new media and up-to-date research findings. The teaching methods and instructional aids are among the most advanced in the country. The college emphasizes technology in education and trains students in the use of technology-enriched learning environments. A primary characteristic of LCE is its emphasis on extended teaching experience. The college offers specializations such as Computers and Mathematics, Children's Literature, Art for Preschoolers, Music Education, Computers in Education, Special Education, Literature in High School and Music Therapy. The college maintains cooperative relationships with schools and preschools across the country, and its graduates are sought after by school principals. As one of the largest colleges of education in Israel, LCE has trained some 44,000 teachers and educators over the years, many of whom have left their mark on the educational system. The college helps novice teachers acquire professional approaches and promotes Jewish, democratic and universal values. The college strives to provide solutions for the demanding requirements of a pluralistic, multicultural and dynamic society.
