The Marble Mosaic

The Marble Mosaic

The Marble Mosaic Co was founded in 1905 by Romano Maddalena in response to the demand for insitu mosaic and terrazzo work, being craft skills traditionally associated with his Italian origins. Its activities were soon extended to include "Imperator", its range of precast terrazzo and cast stone which was produced in its first factory in central Bristol. The Dorchester Hotel in Park Lane in London included the company's precast terrazzo cladding as permanent formwork in its construction during the late 1920's. From the early 1960's and through the 1970's, its skills and resources were focused on producing increasingly large wall cladding panels, typically with exposed aggregate finishes which were usually produced by its own special "face-up" casting technique. The Clifton Cathedral in Bristol, for which we received our first Concrete Society award in 1974, and subsequently both phases of the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg continue to evidence the consistent high quality of these finishes, their durability and excellent weathering properties. Incidentally, these factors were particularly commented upon by the judges when the Cathedral received the Concrete Society's inaugural "Winner of Winners" award in 2007. Since that time, specifications for natural stone and granite faced and brick and terracotta faced precast concrete panels have increasingly featured in the Company's work load, coupled with a flourishing demand for reconstructed stone finished cladding panels, predominantly for the office, retail and high-rise residential sectors but also including new buildings for leisure and education as well as hospitals and churches.
