Two years before M&M Plumbing and Heating was established in Indian River in 1957, its founder Dick Monthei and his cousin Monte created what was first known as Monte and Monthei Plumbing and Heating in the metro Flint area. With only a single truck to work out of, the pair labored diligently between other jobs and commitments (such as Dick's day job at Fischer Plumbing and Heating in Flint), frequently spending late nights and early mornings working at the houses of friends and family. After laying the groundwork of the future M&M Plumbing and Heating during those late-night house calls in Flint, Dick and his wife Crystal traveled north to the Inland Waterway, ultimately landing in Indian River. Here, he would spend the rest of his life fostering a commitment to local business, personable service and superior knowledge in plumbing, heating and cooling. In its formative years, the M&M shop came to be known as the place where one could not only get plumbing advice and parts, but also a cup of coffee and a casual conversation with Dick or one of the plumbers he had employed at the time. Now, though the original members of the M&M crew have all retired or passed away, including Dick himself, the business has stuck to its roots and remained in the Monthei family, after Dick turned the business over to his son Scott in 2007. And although M&M has thrived through two generations, the values that Dick established from the beginning while working long days out of a single truck with his cousin Monte still stand strong in the M&M Plumbing and Heating business philosophy. It's the casual conversations in the shop, and the friendly, personal service that M&M has come to be known for. It's the long hours spent at a customer's home to ensure they are happy with the finished product.
