Maury Loontjens Memorial Library

Our library has had many names in the past, so you may still see references today to some of our old names: Narragansett Pier Free Library Association, Narragansett Public Library and most currently the Maury Loontjens Memorial Library. The library was named after the Town Manager of Narragansett who passed away in 2006. He was a long-time resident, teacher, councilman, volunteer, avid reader and huge library supporter. Statistics show that our library has over 78,000 items in its collection and circulated 175,387 items in 2016. The library hosted over 495 programs with over 8,442 people attending. Libraries have become known as community centers, and our library is certainly that! Many residents gather to meet friends, discuss books and read the newspapers. The library maintains a close connection with the latest in technology and provides computers with free Internet Access, E-readers to borrow as well as Hot Spots that can be taken out for up to 3 weeks. Book Clubs, weekly movies, special speakers and other activities entice readers to interact on a variety of levels. The Children's Room certainly has a large collection of books for all ages. Did you know there is a castle with puppets, a doll house, Legos galore, puzzles, computers and much more. You may also visit with our pet gerbil, Cinder. Programs range from weekly story times, to monthly book clubs, craft sessions and other activities. Museum Passes are available to borrow for either free or reduced admission to local state museums, aquariums and gardens, as well as some Massachusetts museums. The Library Board of Trustees along with the Town of Narragansett have been working together to get a new library that has more to offer, especially more space. The Friends of the Narragansett Library have also been a big support to the Library. Keep an eye open for news on the library project which is a work in progress.
