The BSI was established in London in 1901 as the Engineering Standards Committee, and it was not until some thirty years after its formation that the BSI was granted a Royal Charter and assumed its present name the British Standards Institution. Now, as the BSI, the institution operates globally, and the standards it publishes are regarded as some of the world's finest examples of standardisation.
