Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group Pty Limited (NCIG) owns and operates one of Australia's major coal export terminals with proximate rail, storage and shiploading facilities and associated infrastructure. The Terminal is located on Kooragang Island at the Port of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia and is strategically placed at the mouth of the Hunter River, approximately 160 kilometres from Sydney. The Terminal is situated on an industrialised island and has strong logistical connections as part of the Hunter Valley Coal Chain integrated coal export infrastructure operation. The Terminal services long life coal mines in the Newcastle, Hunter Valley, Gunnedah, Gloucester and Western Coalfields of New South Wales by providing access to port infrastructure to export their coal production. NCIG's Terminal has been operating for over three years and was expanded to an installed capacity of 66 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) on 30 June 2013. The Terminal forms part of the export gateway for the substantial Hunter Valley coal industry, with the Port of Newcastle representing the export route for production in the region. Over 90% of coal exported through the NCIG Terminal is thermal coal to be supplied to established energy consumers in Asia such as Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, with significant recent and forecast growth in exports to the developing economy of China. The key components of the NCIG terminal are: The Inbound System incorporating rail sidings and rail balloon loop, dump stations and two inbound sampling stations.
