Orian Solutions

Orian is a sister company of the already highly successful Carlisle-based Cumbria Waste Group, which has operated in the private sector since it was created by Cumbria County Council nearly 20 years ago. Group Chief Executive, Mike Bareham, said: "When the Council was looking at options for the future of the foodservice and cleaning business it was felt that the best option was to establish a new wholly owned local authority company to run the service." "The council wanted to work with a management team it knew, that were local and understood the area and who had a good track record in providing quality services for the people of Cumbria - Cumbria Waste Group exactly fitted the bill and we have been extensively involved in creating the new company Orian." "I am sure there will be new opportunities for customers who wish to combine the services they require through an integrated facilities management solution which can be delivered by a single service provider - such as waste management, service management, cleaning and catering, therefore offering even more opportunities to save money." The name Orian was chosen following extensive consultation with staff at both Cumbria County Council and Cumbria Waste Group. Both wanted a name which was local and which had deeper meaning. Orian is the Celtic name for the 6th century king of Rheged who was possibly one of the earliest Christian Kings in Britain. The heart of his kingdom was modern Cumbria and his court is said to have played host to King Arthur whenever he was travelling through the North, and Orian is thought to have married Arthur's half-sister. It is this sense of heritage, history, quality and local flavour which led the team to think Orian would be a good name for the new business. And the royal connection also saw regal purple and gold being chosen as Orian's main colours. These are reflected in the new uniforms all Orian staff will be wearing. Alistair Irvine added: "We are committed to using local Cumbrian supply routes wherever possible, providing the best possible service to our customers and clients as well as minimising the impact on the environment and protecting the area's rich heritage." "At Orian we believe that caring about our people and our region whilst still protecting the environment enables us to provide the best possible service to our customers." Four new offices have been developed to ensure Orian can fully support the region with hubs at Maryport, Ulverston and Kendal and the new head office based in Carlisle.
