PEP sells 57% of all schoolwear in South Africa. PEP's position on school uniforms is: standardise school uniforms based on the most common items used currently do not compromise quality use economies of scale to bring costs - and therefore prices to consumers - down schools can differentiate themselves by adding badges and/or different coloured jerseys and fleeces. PEP Clothing (Pepclo) manufactures standard school items and the Student Prince brand (of which some items are SABS certified). Every day, the PEPclo factory produces around 9 500 grey trousers and shorts and between 14 000 and 21 000 shirts. PEP, which opened its first store over 47 years ago, is now the biggest single brand retailer in Southern Africa As a cash only retailer, PEP does not encourage credit buying but does operate a lay-bye facility for customers to pay for products over time (with no admin fees or interest charged).
