SportsPITTSBURGH is charged with the mission to bid on and host sporting events and to generate positive economic activity in the legendary sports city of Pittsburgh. It is the sports development division of VisitPITTSBURGH, the official tourism agency of Allegheny County. SportsPITTSBURGH tells the story of Pittsburgh as an authentic, iconic and legendary sports city to national and international audiences. The team also serves as brand ambassadors promoting the message of Pittsburgh as the ultimate destination to host major sporting events. SportsPITTSBURGH works to maximize the value and impact sports events and meetings bring to the city and its residents. It improves access to sports programming and participation for locals through integration with key sports events. It also serves as a coordinator between event planners and relevant community stakeholders to promote community engagement with events. SportsPITTSBURGH celebrated its inaugural year in 2016 with many impressive accomplishments including participation on a local bid committee that was formed to submit 70 separate NCAA championship bids under one Pittsburgh proposal. Pittsburgh was awarded 22 NCAA preliminary and championship events from 2018-2022, more than any other city.
