PNG Biomass

PNG Biomass donated in excess of 2,000 Eucalyptus seedlings to the Lae District Administration, Care International, schools and local institutions to support initiatives to celebrate World Environment Day (WED) on 5 June 2016. World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5 June to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet, and PNG Biomass's donation recognises the important contribution that trees make to the well being of a healthy global environment. PNG Biomass, which operates a nursery within the grounds of PNG Forest Research Institue (FRI) in Lae, was approached to assist FRI by donating seedlings for distribution to schools and local organisations to mark World Environment Day. FRI Public Relations Officer, Ms Talitha Raif, said that FRI "much appreciated the contribution from Biomass to assist us on this WED 2015. Fourteen institutions received seedlings as a part of the distribution, this included Steamships, Dulux, Balob Teachers College, Coronation College, Timber College, Busu Secondary School, Bugandi Secondary School, Butibum Primary School, Taraka Primary School, Bubia Primary School, Erap Primary School, and Bualu Elementary School. The Lae District Administration used World Environment Day to promote the National Youth Policy goal 'to care and protect the environment for the benefit of future generations'. 400 trees were donated by PNG Biomass and the Lae District Community Development Division coordinated the planting of trees along many of the Lae City roads to replace raintrees which have been cut down. Care International in PNG conducted an Open Day at Menyamya to promote the understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues. 600 seedlings were transported from Lae to Menyamya for distibution to local groups including Menyamya Primary School, Menyamya Secondary School, Menyamya TVET, Wapi LLG, Kapao LLG, Kome LLG, Nanima-Kariba LLG, Lutheran Health Services, and Menyamya Health Centre. In the Wampar LLG, the Ganef Community Nursery, supported by PNG Biomass, donated seedlings to the Zifaseng Primary School and Leron Primary School to assist in their celebration of World Environment Day.
