The Prospector Theater

The Prospector Theater, is a nonprofit movie theater in Ridgefield, CT opening Summer 2014. The Prospector will show a full range of movies to meet the needs and desires of our community and will delight audiences young and old. The Prospector Foundation's mission is to promote the media arts and public interest in the media arts in the Town of Ridgefield and the surrounding area, to promote civic pride in the community and lessen the burdens of government through the preservation of the historic character of the Town and the architectural integrity within the Ridgefield Center Historic District, and to improve the quality of life in the community for adults with disabilities. The Prospector will be a premier venue for the enjoyment of entertainment and the arts for audiences of all ages. It will serve as a model for non-profits by emphasizing self-sustainability in achieving its' charitable purposes. The Prospector will be a place for education and entertainment in the historic center of town, featuring: 3 screens with state-of-the-art technology in both sight and sound First run movies, classics, theme nights, independent films, documentaries, alternate content Cafe, Bar, Restaurant Arcade, meeting, party and training rooms This brand new theater is being built in the location of the original Ridgefield Playhouse, which opened as the town's first movie house in 1940 and had been renovated and used as a bank for some 25 years when it was repurchased in 2000 by the Ridgefield Library for its expansion. Valerie Jensen, creator of the Prospector, for years has led both live theater and film-making by SPHERE, a local group that serves developmentally disabled people. Through her vision, the Prospector will also be an educational and vocational training center for adults with developmental disabilities.
