Punta Cana International Airport
Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), the first privately owned international airport, is located within the 15,000 acre Puntacana Resort & Club complex on the eastern shores of the Dominican Republic. The airport was envisioned and developed by Dominican businessman Frank Rainieri, President of Grupo Puntacana. The airport was inaugurated in 1984, starting with a 5000 foot runway, a small terminal and aircraft parking apron. In the airport's first year of operation it serviced just 2,976 international passengers. Punta Cana International Airport is now the largest airport in the Caribbean, having managed 7 million arrivals in 2016.
