Belfast Area High School

RSU #20 Healthy Kids is a dedicated group of parents and health professionals interested in working with the Food Service Director, Superintendent and School Board to address several areas of concern with the food service program - with the aim of creating a healthier, self-sustaining program for our children. We have been meeting for over a year, under the guidance of RSU #20's School Health coordinator, Linda Hartkopf, researching all aspects of food service programs--in our own district, throughout the state and nationally. Last December, we met with Superintendent Bruce Mailloux and Food Service Director Perley Martin and formally stated our concerns. The group has already engaged in several initiatives. We have conducted a parent survey regarding the food service program. In February, our group met with Cherie Merril, the Food Service Director for RSU #3, which we have identified as an excellent model of a health-oriented, self-sustaining program. We have also developed a website, which articulates our goals and also provides information and resources around nutrition and health-locally and on the national front.
