San Gabriel Unified School District

Located in Southern California's San Gabriel Valley, ten miles east of downtown Los Angeles, the San Gabriel Unified School District educates over 6,000 kindergarten through twelfth grade students in the diverse community of San Gabriel. San Gabriel is a city rich in history. Established in 1781, the San Gabriel Mission was the first California mission and is considered the birthplace of the Los Angeles region. The District is proud of its long tradition of academic excellence. There are currently five elementary schools (K-5), one middle school (6-8), one charter school (K-12), one comprehensive high school (9-12), and one continuation high school (10-12) in the District. San Gabriel Unified School District is committed to providing a strong instructional program for all students to ensure excellence in education. This excellence can be seen in the staff who play such a vital role in providing a quality educational program. Built in 1988, Washington Elementary School is one of the oldest schools in the San Gabriel Valley. In 1923, the original two story wooden and brick structure was replaced with a new Spanish style school with tiled roofs. Though the school has been renovated numerous times over the years, the bell from the school's original bell tower still resides in the shady quad section of the campus. Washington Elementary School, which operates on a traditional school calendar, serves more than 450 students in grades kindergarten through fifth. Teachers, staff, and administrators act on the principle that students come first. The educational programs at the school are tailored to meet the needs of each individual student. Washington Elementary School is dedicated to ensuring the academic success of every student and providing the most comprehensive educational experience. Washington Elementary School works diligently to meet the needs of the whole child through an educational program based upon the total involvement of the teacher, parent, and child.
