Our story is one of family, community, and hard work. Sheng Kee Bakery was established in 1948 in Taiwan by my Grandmother and Grandfather. Like most people in Taiwan during the post-war era, our family started Sheng Kee as a way to survive. At first we opened a convenience store selling miscellaneous commodities, ice cream, and bread to our local neighborhood. But as times changed, we had to adapt. Bread and pastries became our specialty. Grandpa Kao would open up shop every morning, and Grandma Kao would close every evening. Through all the ups and the downs, they raised a family and did their best to provide them with all the opportunities that they themselves weren't afforded. When our parents came to America, they brought along that tradition. We opened our first bakery in America in 1981. We started on Irving Street in the Sunset District of San Francisco, a central gathering place for the Asian-American community in the Bay Area. Sheng Kee "" means to make a living. Like most first-generation immigrants, the hardships and joys we experienced brought our community together and solidified the importance of keeping our cultural traditions. Over the last 35+ years we have grown and have always remembered our roots. Sheng Kee has built our name on remembering those roots. In the early 1990's, we pioneered the crafting and distribution of Moon Cakes in America. What started off as a seasonal product to celebrate the Autumn Moon Festival, through dedication and support soon became one of our staple specialties.
