Southern Illinois University
Southern Illinois is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference and sponsors 16 intercollegiate sports programs. SIU is best known for its strong basketball tradition that dates back to Walt Frazier, who led the Salukis to a national championship in 1967. Saluki Basketball has appeared in 10 NCAA Tournaments, including six straight from 2002-07. The Football program also has a storied tradition that includes a national championship in 1983, plus seven-straight playoff appearances from 2003-09. Famous football alums include quarterback Jim Hart, running back Brandon Jacobs and linebacker Bart Scott. The Baseball program has produced 24 Major League Baseball players and made five College World Series appearances. The Softball program has made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, including five straight from 2003-07. The Track & Field program has been a national powerhouse for more than 50 years, producing 163 All-Americans, 29 Olympians and 19 NCAA Champions. Academically, Saluki Athletics leads the MVC with 93 Academic All-Americans all-time.
