Somers Orthopaedic Surgery was founded in 1988 by Joel S. Buchalter, M.D. and Douglas J. Fauser, M.D., who met while residents at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. The two decided to begin an orthopaedic practice in Somers, New York. At the time, Joel and Doug, in addition to a secretary, were the only practitioners on staff. The two young doctors would take turns operating the x-ray machine while seeing patients. After a lot of long hours and hard work, they earned an excellent reputation and the practice began to grow. In the span of 20 years, doctors were added to the staff and the practice quickly outgrew its humble beginnings. In 2000, they worked with Putnam Hospital Center to create an Orthopaedic Center of Excellence which would be built and devoted to musculoskeletal care. They moved into the new center in 2001 which houses an ambulatory surgery center, MRI, CT, pain management, physical therapy, and Vertical Laminar Airflow surgical suites for total hip, knee, and shoulder replacements. Today, the staff at Somers Orthopaedics has grown to include 16 Physicians, 5 Physician Assistants, 4 Physical Therapists, and a supporting staff of over 100. A fellowship trained Rheumatologist from the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases enhances the expertise of the group, making Somers Orthopaedics one of the most comprehensive and specialized practices in the region. Our highly trained physicians specialize in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions in adults and children. All our surgeons are board certified and experienced, having completed rigorous training at the finest medical institutions in the country.
