The Thomas County Board of Education held its first meeting of the new calendar year Tuesday night. After the invocation, outgoing chair Charles Evans declared the positions of chair and vice chair vacant and asked for nominations. Board member Nancy Hiers made a motion that Kay Streets be elected chair and that Mark NeSmith be elected vice chair. Leah Smith seconded Hiers motion. Evans called for any additional nominations. There were no additional nominations, so Streets and NeSmith were elected to their respective roles with no dissenting votes. As a part of Constitution Week, the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) has been giving out pocket-sized Constitution books to all fourth graders at public schools in the state of Georgia. Georgia Superintendent Richard Woods personally visited Cross Creek Elementary School recently and presented the books, along with the importance of the Constitution, to all fourth graders as part of his ongoing citizenship initiative. While visiting several classrooms at Cross Creek, Woods heard from students, educators and other stakeholders in the Thomas County School System about what is working, what changes could be made, and how the GaDOE can be of service. The book, titled The Words that Built America, contains the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, the Amendments to the Constitution, the Pledge of Allegiance, and Dr. Martin Luther Kings I Have a Dream Speech. Woods told the students the book will continue to be useful throughout their school journey as they study Georgia state government and Georgia history.
