The Department of Transportation was established by an act of Congress on October 15, 1966, and it's first official day of operation was April 1, 1967. The U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) mission is to ensure the safety and efficiency of the rural and urban transportation system across the US. It is based in Washington, D.C.
