Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation

Over the last decade the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation has seen an increase in young adults wishing to pursue their education in many post secondary fields. The Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation is committed to supporting our young people, as funding agencies cannot fully fund students. We do this by providing financial support based on the student's application of studies. Because the student funding provided by VGFN is not 100%, we encourage our students to seek additional funding. We will assist students in seeking this funding. In May 2004, the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation took over the Student Support Program from the Department of Indian Affairs. We adopted some of their guidelines to carry out the program to fit our own needs. In August 2004, Chief Linklater appointed five people to the Vuntut Gwitchin Education Committee. This is the first time a Committee has been appointed to oversee the Post Secondary and Training programs for the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation. Our position requires us to accept, review and make decisions on all post secondary and trades applications. VGFN Education Committee: William Josie - Chair Megan Williams - Secretary Donna Frost - Committee Member Tracy Rispin-Kassi - Committee Member An Education and Training Policy was also developed to help the VGFN Education Committee with their decision making. This Policy supersedes any other Education and Training Policy that may have been used by VGFN in the past. Of course, since this is a new Policy, the VGFN Education Committee has made the commitment of reviewing the Policy on a yearly basis. This commitment is to better serve our young people in their decision of returning back to school.
