Vilnius University is the oldest and largest university in Lithuania, which involves top students, professors and researchers, develops responsible citizens and leaders of the society. Founded in 1579 Vilnius University is the leader in the majority of studies and research directions. Vilnius University prioritizes the quality of research and studies, the freedom of academic thought and self-expression. Vilnius University is among 1.5 percent top universities in the world according to the QS World University Ranking. As one of the oldest and best-known Central and Eastern Europe's higher education institutions, the university had a big influence not only for Lithuania's culture but also for other neighboring countries' cultures as well, it has raised several generations of famous intellectuals. By enriching Lithuania's economic, social and cultural capital Vilnius University seeks to become university that strengthens its country. Last year the university community paid great attention to get involved among Europe's strongest universities, with an emphasis on international studies and their development. It is one of the universities strategic directions, which will be relevant in the upcoming years. One of the biggest last year accomplishments was the creation of Europe's universities' alliance ARQUS. European Commission has financed alliance projects for 5 million euros, and according to this amount will be possible to strengthen European universities' competitiveness and enhance the quality of education.
