Wasilla Area Seniors

Wasilla Area Seniors, Inc. was established in 1981 with a mission to provide for the lives of seniors living in the Matanuska and Susitna Valleys and to enable seniors to live independently as possible for as long as possible. The Wasilla Senior Center was founded in 1978 as an activity center. In 1981, Frank Smith donated land and Wasilla Senior Center was relocated, to its current location, and incorporated as Wasilla Area Seniors, Inc (WASI). The building itself was named the Floyd D. Smith Community Center, in loving memory of Frank Smith's father. Today, in keeping with our mission, WASI provides services and resources to promote health and independence. Housing: Wasilla Area Senior Housing consists of five housing complexes: Knik Manor, Raven Tree Court, Alder View, Susitna Place, and Eagle's Nest. The five buildings collectively house 127 units for individuals 62 years of age and older. Each of the five buildings has a common area for congregate games, puzzles, reading, or TV. Surrounding the housing complexes are large grassy areas and a picnic pavilion complete with a gas grill and gazebo-covered seating. Club 50 Fitness Center: Club 50 is a gym, located on the WASI campus, for individuals 50 years of age and older. Club 50 provides state-of-the-art exercise equipment and offers a variety of fitness classes including: Strong Seniors, Qigong, Tai Chi, NIA, and Zumba. Fall Prevention: The Fall Prevention program is a multi-factor community-based older adult fall prevention demonstration project in the Mat-Su Borough, intended to document processes and specified outcomes through a collaborative network of community providers, member of the Coalition of Mat-Su Senior Centers and other stakeholders, led by Wasilla Area Seniors, Inc. Carlene's Gift Shop: The gift shop is open 10 am until 1 pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It is filled with an array of homemade jams & jellies, beautiful quilts, Afghans, dolls, hand-knit children's sweaters, and so much more. Mary Hall Lending Library: The Mary Hall Lending Library has hundreds of books in paperback, audio, and large print format. The library has a computer lab complete with internet access available for public use. WASI also offers classes to seniors interested in becoming computer savvy. Congregate Meals: WASI provides well-balanced, delicious lunches Monday thru Saturday from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm. The meals menus consist of soup, entrée, vegetables, salad, and dessert. Fruit juices, soft drinks, milk, coffee, and tea are available during meal time. Meals on Wheels: Hot, delicious meals are delivered by our friendly drivers daily. This program helps to ensure that no senior goes hungry, and helps individuals to remain in their own home and living independently for as long as possible. In FY 2014, WASI served over 80,000 meals.
