Women & Infants Hospital
Founded in 1884, Women & Infants Hospital is the top health resource in southeastern New England for women and newborns. With approximately 9,000 births a year, it is the seventh largest obstetric provider nationwide. It houses a total of 257 beds (for both adults and infants) and 8 operating rooms, providing a range of essential services to women and infants regardless of payment abilities. In addition to the standard obstetrical services and peri- and post-natal care, Women & Infants gives patients the option of delivering in their Alternative Birthing Center, where 224 babies were born in the fiscal year 2000. As well as being affiliated with Brown University School of Medicine, the hospital includes 9 research and education centers focused on a multitude of elements of women's healthcare.
