WVTF is no longer providing school closing, delay, early dismissal information on the air or on line. For the two decades we've been providing the school information on the air, we have incrementally grown in size serving a larger listening area (more than half of Virginia's land mass) making this part of our informational service increasingly unmanageable. While our broadcast area was growing, technology advanced, resulting in our service becoming superfluous to other media offerings as well as direct-to-user methods used by schools and colleges such as text messaging and posts on their web sites and social media. Additionally, local TV stations - early entrants in providing this service - put the information and update it on their web sites and by crawling it continuously on the screen. This combination - our growing listening area, evolving delivery methods, multiple and wider sources for the information - guided our decision.
