How to Arrange Furniture in a Bedroom — for Maximum Style and Comfort When it comes to modern bedroom layouts, placement is everything. The latest trend, and also the one that offers the most amount of flow, is to arrange all the pieces — the bed, nightstand, dresser, and vanity — in a way that all the furniture pieces create an attractive presentation when viewed from each angle in the room. This gives it all a museum-like quality, yet it should also be comfortable. In this article, we’re going to cover several major tips, including the oft-asked question of “Where should a bed be placed in a bedroom?” So, get ready to totally rethink how you go about arranging the various pieces in your bedroom — and that all starts with the bed. The Bed: It’s What it a Bedroom, Right? Bed placement is the first thing you’ll want to consider when rearranging your bedroom (or arranging it for the first time). The bed is the single largest piece of furniture within a bedroom. Therefore, it holds both visual weights and it takes up quite a bit of floor space. Typically, a king- or queen-size bed will be placed with the headboard on the wall opposite the door to the bedroom. But, depending on your floorpan and the amount of space you have, you do have some leeway in terms of bed placement (more on that later). In fact, placing the headboard against the door-facing wall has become such a standard layout concept that it’s even listed in the Dummies guide to bedroom furniture arrangement. With all the possibilities to consider, it may be better to cover the “don’ts” of bed placement before we get into some modern bed placement concepts. The “don’ts” include: Never place a bed where it obstructs a walkway or door Beds should not be placed next to a window that is frequently left open. Sleeping in a damp bed is never ideal. Angle the Bed to Create the Feel of More Space While most wouldn’t give a second thought to making an Empire-style sleigh bed parallel with the wall, why not set it at an angle to give the room a more contemporary feel and break the monotony? Not only will setting the bed at an angle afford better flow in the bedroom, but it will also create the illusion of having more space in the room than there actually is. We’re often asked “How do I make my bedroom look bigger?” and angling the bed is one great way to about it, but there are also other ways to make a small bedroom look nice. If you have the opposite problem of trying to make a larger bedroom feel cosier, we’ve also written a great article on how to make large bedrooms feel more personal and welcoming. What About the Dresser and Nightstand? This brings us to the dresser. If you have a matched bedroom set, then you will want the face of the dresser and the face of the headboard to be visually apparent as you walk into the room. Since most modern bedrooms have an off-centre point of entry, it should be fairly easy to arrange the dresser, headboard, and bed in a way that they all greet you as you walk into the room. The nightstand is so ubiquitous in modern bedrooms that ditching it completely and going with some kind of nightstand alternative can make a bold design statement. A well-placed stack of books or even a beautifully finished tree core can give your room a country, rustic charm. But, there is something to be said about an elegant nightstand that is matched with a quality bedroom set. If you can’t find a bedroom set that is attractive to you, just remember that there are many types of bedroom sets online, so never settle! Don’t Let ‘Stuff’ Clutter Your Design Goals If you are having trouble arranging your bedroom, chances are clutter is getting in the way of creating a tranquil space. We love these six tips on how to de-clutter your bedroom. Often times, when we flip the interior design catalogues what we are drawn to is the utter simplicity of the designs; pendant lights, a slightly tussled bedspread, a few pictures on the wall, and a potted plant on an uncluttered nightstand. The simple life. One item of necessary clutter is a nightstand light. With our iPads, smartphones, books, and other items that have become modern essentials, a bedside light takes up more nightstand real estate than it did in the past. One great way to clear up some space is investing in some wall-mounted bed lights, as recommended by Apartment Therapy, a design-focused website. Tune-In to Textures Most of us are great at matching colours and incorporating items that set a general design theme, but it is in the textures of bedroom furniture where we often falter. If you have any interior design magazines around the house, open it up to just about any page and you will begin to see how the various lines and textures of furniture pieces work together more than you probably realize. Whether it’s the raised beading on a wooden bed frame, or the slats on wooden blinds, the various textures in a room create a subtle, but striking symphony of style. Add a Loveseat or Storage Trunk If you have a bedroom set picked out, you may want to consider adding a loveseat or storage trunk to the foot of the bed (if space allows). A well-placed loveseat can give the room a greater sense of purpose, making it not only a room to sleep in but also a space to lounge and relax. You can find a storage trunk that either matches your bed set, or serves as a stylistic companion. Of course, a trunk can serve multiple purposes; decluttering your bedroom and adding a gorgeous visual element are two great examples. Closing Thought While we primarily focused on design considerations in this article, don’t forget that your bedroom should be the most comfortable room in your home. Therefore, if you find a particular arrangement doesn’t work for you, trust your intuition and rearrange it in a way that better serves your particular needs. Good luck with your bedroom arrangement project!
