Afya Baltimore
Founded in 2007, Afya Baltimore Inc. (ABI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization started by five Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS) educators for the purpose of creating charter schools in the city of Baltimore. Our founders, Karen Hughes, Katie Eichman, Will McKenna, Mike Morgan and Patricia Njenga, have an extensive combined knowledge of the urban public school climate- Baltimore in particular- and profound experience across the categories of teaching, administration, training, curriculum development, academic accountability, community relations, nutrition and athletics. ABI now consists of a talented and diverse group of community leaders, educators and parents that make up our Board of Directors, an Executive Director, and various committees, which all work together to support our schools. All of our founders remain active and employed with the ABI organization. In 2008, ABI opened Afya Public Charter School (APCS) in the Belair-Edison neighborhood. APCS is a middle school, serving 350 students in grades six through eight. In 2010, ABI opened Tunbridge Public Charter School (TPCS), an elementary / middle school in the Govans neighborhood, serving 450 students in grades pre-k through eight. In 2016, we opened Brehms Lane Public Charter School (BLPCS), a conversion neighborhood charter school in Belair-Edison, serving 700 students in grades pre-k through fifth.
