What does AIRC do? AIRC raises funds and gives out grants for cancer research, and keeps the public up to date on the latest news in this field. Fundraising takes place in two forms: 50% through national and local events designed for the general public and the business community, and 50% through letters requesting support. How does AIRC choose which projects to fund and select recipients for study grants? AIRC has implemented a peer review process that ensures a fair, independent and expert evaluation of the scientific quality of all grant applications. For the evaluation of all applications AIRC relies on the expertise of well established foreign investigators ("AIRC preferred reviewers") and internationally recognized Italian scientists who are part of the AIRC Scientific Committee (CTS). Members of the CTS serve for three years, and can extend their appointment up to three additional years. In all, over 600 scientists work to review about 800 proposals each year. Each grant application, written in accordance with precise and exacting documentation, is assigned to at least three reviewers. Only the most scientifically meritorious applications, identified through the peer review process in a rigorous and objective manner, are funded. How can I learn more about AIRC's national and local events? To learn about AIRC's national initiatives and those organized by our Regional Committees, please visit our Events. For more information on local events, please see the Regional Committees page for contact details.
