It is a type of market research where individuals are paid to anonymously audit a business against service and other standards. In mystery shopping, shoppers (or Truth Sleuths as fondly refer to them) act as ordinary customers on a regular visit to the store and complete a short questionnaire afterwards that documents their experience.
