Beacon Finland
Beacon Finland Ltd Oy, established in 1987, is a privately owned, independent naval architectural consulting company located in the town of Rauma, Finland. The company works primarily with ship-owners, shipyards and ship equipment manufacturers. The company's main service activities are ship design, design and sales of ship equipment for the Offshore industry (drilling FPSO and FLNG) and the Marine transportation industry, as well as supervision and management of ship repair and conversions. Our designers have a very long and profound experience in both domestic and foreign projects, using the latest design tools and computer programs. Experts in hydrodynamics, ship propulsion and ship theory, structural strength including finite elements techniques, hydraulics etc. are available. Beacon Finland also utilizes its wide network of skilled freelance designers and partner companies. Other products that Beacon Finland has been designing are fixed propeller nozzles, steerable propeller nozzles and conventional rudders. Beacon Finland has developed two major product ranges that have widely been installed in vessels around the world. The JAK® ATB Coupling System for pusher-barge assembly originates from the beginning of 1990. ATB means an articulated tug-barge coupling system where a tug is engaged to a barge with two couplers. These allow tug and barge to pivot in vertical direction independently and so reducing forces in joint. These systems have successfully been installed and used e.g. by the leading transportation companies in the USA. The BeaCan™ - Thruster Canister (originally known as "the Beacon Canister"), which enable service and maintenance of propulsion systems without removing the vessel from the working position, is the result of a thorough development phase within Beacon Finland. The company is the original developer of the innovation and has made the concept design of the BeaCan™ Thruster Canister. The range of different BeaCan™ Thruster Canister solutions is the latest successful innovation from Beacon Finland. The basic idea of BeaCan™ is to get the thruster system in the maintenance position above the waterline to allow inspection, overhauling and maintenance of the thruster system without dry-docking of the vessel. The possibility to do the maintenance inside the canister and with one of the thruster systems retracted into the canister offers many advantages. It saves a lot of money spent on transporting the vessel to a dry-dock. Not to mention the docking expenses. It also enables the drilling vessel to continue with the drilling work during the service and increases the safety of the staff, as there is no need for underwater work. As the first need for service or maintenance occurs, the investment pays off. The concept of the BeaCan Thruster Canister is adaptable to different kind of requirements, depending on the customer's needs, vessels and operational circumstances.
