He saw firsthand a brain injured patients 'revolving door'; months of in-patient rehabilitation programming, discharged home (often to the care of their families), calls for help from those families (experiencing distress from the struggles related to the continuing effects of brain injury) and finally readmittance of the brain injured person to the in-patient rehab center for a "tune-up" of sorts. Drawing on career experience, (Craig began his career as a behavior analyst delivering in-home applied behavior analysis (ABA) services to families in need resultant from child maltreatment), he surmised that if Michigan families encountering brain injury could receive in-home ABA services, then preservation of families and solutions to some challenging behaviors could be addressed at home. In the end, preventing re-admittance to a residential facility and providing better outcomes for patient and family members. BC became the first company of its kind in Michigan, introducing in-home ABA services to families encountering brain injury. In the beginning, a small group of behavior analysts and specialists embarked on delivering much needed, and physician ordered, ABA services to clients. Recently (2013) when the state of Michigan mandated insurance providers offer ABA services from Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA's) to provide services to those affected by autism, the staff of BC were effectively mobilized to add autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to its ABA service offering. Today, BC continues our home-based model for both populations we serve. We firmly believe the benefits of providing treatment within ones "ultimate environment of functioning" provides an excellent pathway for progress and improvement. Rigorous training, supervision and oversight are required for a good clinic or home-based model to succeed.
