Belmont Academy
Belmont Academy is a public charter school for grades Pre-K through 10 in southern Columbia County that has been established through the Florida Charter School program. Charter schools are tuition-free public schools created through an agreement or "charter" between the school and the local school board or a state university. The catalyst for originally forming the academy was the burgeoning number of like-minded home-schooling families in the area who identified the charter school concept as an exciting and viable way to improve their children's education while skirting the objectionable elements of traditional public school models. The school will have a limited enrollment but admission rules will not exclude any applicant in within a geographical radius of the school, as mandated by laws governing charter schools. We envision a school where students develop high expectations for themselves as well as a deeper desire to work together within a school community. The children are encouraged to excel in every subject, so that choosing their own future vocational path is easier. The Belmont Community is a unique one because so many hands are involved in volunteer work, all with willing hearts. We are mindful of the challenges still ahead, yet we embrace each task, confident in the value of the goal. Belmont's charter was approved by the Columbia County School Board on June 26, 2012. We opened our doors in August of 2013, and, as we proceed into the 2014-2015 school year, we have seen great academic strides in our student population. We all look forward to a great future here at Belmont Academy.
